Wed 12th Mar, 2025

The Christian Democratic Union (CDU) has set a timeline for the upcoming election of Friedrich Merz as the next Chancellor of Germany. According to an internal schedule, Merz is expected to be officially elected on April 23. Prior to this, a coalition agreement with the Social Democratic Party (SPD) is slated for signing in the week leading up to Easter, starting April 14.

This strategic timeline has been revealed in a document obtained by sources, outlining the planned discussions and negotiations among the CDU, the Christian Social Union (CSU), and the SPD. The initial round of discussions will commence this Thursday, involving the leadership teams of the three parties alongside the heads of 19 dedicated working groups.

On Tuesday evening, the CDU and CSU finalized the appointments for the chairs of these working groups. Notably, Alexander Dobrindt, the leader of the CSU parliamentary group, is set to oversee financial matters, while Jens Spahn, the deputy leader of the CDU/CSU parliamentary faction, will handle economic issues. This development has sparked speculation regarding their potential candidacies for corresponding ministerial positions within the new government.

The negotiations aim to establish a clear framework for collaboration among the parties, focusing on key areas of governance and policy-making. As the political landscape evolves, the CDU and CSU are eager to solidify their positions and move forward with the coalition agreement, emphasizing their commitment to stability and effective governance in Germany.

With the political climate rapidly changing and public expectations high, the forthcoming weeks will be pivotal for the CDU as it seeks to navigate the complexities of coalition politics while preparing for Merz's anticipated leadership.
