Controversy in CDU After Foreign Minister's Latest Remarks on Syria

Wed 5th Nov, 2025

Recent statements made by Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul regarding the situation in Syria have triggered significant debate within his own party, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU). The controversy centers around Wadephul's assessment of conditions in Syria and his position on the voluntary return of Syrian refugees, which some party members interpret as diverging from the CDU's established policy.

During a session of the Bundestag parliamentary group, Wadephul reportedly compared the current devastation in Syria to the state of Germany at the end of World War II. Multiple attendees verified this comparison, which has since been widely discussed in German media. The Foreign Ministry has not officially commented on these reports.

Several members of the CDU parliamentary group expressed concern and dissatisfaction with Wadephul's remarks. According to internal sources, some attendees described his presentation as troubling and damaging to unity within the party. There are indications that support for the Foreign Minister within his own party has diminished as a result of the incident.

Earlier, during a visit to a heavily damaged suburb of Damascus, Wadephul expressed skepticism about the prospects for a large-scale, voluntary return of Syrian refugees in the near future. He highlighted the severe destruction and questioned whether people could reasonably be expected to return to such conditions. These comments were perceived by some in the CDU as inconsistent with the party's stance, which advocates for the deportation of criminal offenders and encourages the voluntary repatriation of Syrian refugees.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz later clarified the government's position, reaffirming that the civil conflict in Syria has ended and that there are no longer valid grounds for asylum in Germany. Merz stated that the government can now proceed with the repatriation of Syrian nationals, including those who have committed crimes.

Despite this clarification, internal dissatisfaction persisted over the timing and nature of Wadephul's statements. Party leader Jens Spahn publicly indicated that it would have been preferable for the Foreign Minister to have clarified his position sooner to prevent misunderstandings. Wadephul subsequently addressed the issue prior to another parliamentary group meeting, stressing that both he and the Foreign Ministry fully support the return of criminal offenders and threats to Syria and Afghanistan. He also emphasized ongoing efforts to facilitate the voluntary return of a larger number of Syrians to assist in reconstruction efforts in their homeland, aligning this statement with previous comments made by Chancellor Merz.

Within the parliamentary group, Wadephul reiterated these points but reportedly received only lukewarm responses from his colleagues. The controversial comparison to post-war Germany was made at the end of his remarks, and no further comments were made by other members present at the meeting.

This episode reflects ongoing tensions within the CDU regarding refugee policy and the challenges of addressing the humanitarian situation in Syria while balancing domestic political considerations.
