Fri 14th Mar, 2025

The Bundeswehr has officially created a new division dedicated to home defense in Germany, marking a significant expansion of its military structure. This development was announced during a formal ceremony held at the Julius-Leber-Kaserne in Berlin, led by Lieutenant General Alfons Mais, the Inspector of the Army. This newly formed division represents the fourth major unit within the Bundeswehr.

The primary mission of this home defense division is to safeguard critical infrastructure and ensure the protection of allied troop deployments. Initially, the division will comprise approximately 6,000 personnel, including both men and women, tasked with various roles that include providing assistance during disasters.

In light of the evolving security landscape following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the importance of home defense has notably increased, prompting a reinforcement of these capabilities. Previously, home defense operations were managed by the state commands of Germany's 16 federal states. The new division will incorporate five existing home defense regiments, with a sixth regiment set to be established by April 1.

This strategic move reflects Germany's commitment to enhancing its national defense framework and adapting to contemporary security challenges. The formation of the home defense division is seen as a proactive step towards bolstering the Bundeswehr's readiness and ensuring a coordinated response to potential threats.
