The early Bundestag elections have commenced, allowing approximately two million eligible voters in Brandenburg to cast their ballots. Polling stations opened at 8:00 AM today. However, several neighborhoods in Cottbus faced disruptions as multiple households and polling locations were without electricity on this critical voting day. The local energy provider is actively working to address the issue.
Andreas Pohle, the deputy district election officer, commented on the situation, noting the discomfort caused by the power failure, particularly as some polling places were left cold without heating. A total of four out of the 53 polling stations in Cottbus were affected by the outage.
The election features 132 candidates from twelve different parties vying for seats, with 85 candidates standing for election in the constituencies and 107 on the party lists. Notably, 60 candidates are contesting both as direct candidates and on the party lists. Major parties participating include the SPD, AfD, CDU, FDP, and the Greens, among others.
For many, this election marks the first opportunity to vote, with around 54,000 young individuals eligible to participate. The election process is supported by approximately 28,000 election helpers who are assisting with voting and counting procedures.
Each voter has two votes: the first vote is for a direct candidate in one of the ten constituencies, while the second vote is cast for a party list. The second vote plays a crucial role in determining the distribution of seats in the Bundestag. This election is especially significant for the BSW party, which is participating in its first Bundestag election.
The campaign has seen intensive efforts, especially in the final hours leading up to the elections, with party leaders making appeals to undecided voters. Despite lower polling numbers, SPD Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed optimism as he voted in Potsdam. Meanwhile, Annalena Baerbock, the Greens' leading candidate, engaged voters with not only campaign materials but also free food items.
The elections come after a tumultuous political period, and the outcome will be closely monitored, particularly as the electoral reform means that not all candidates who win in their constituencies will automatically secure a seat in the Bundestag. The provisional results of the election for Brandenburg are expected to be available around midnight, with full clarity on which candidates will be entering the Bundestag likely to unfold later into the night.
