The Bundestag has approved approximately EUR1.1 billion to facilitate bridge renovations across Germany, effectively averting potential delays in infrastructure projects. The decision by the budget committee allows the state-owned Autobahn GmbH to proceed with the awarding of contracts, ensuring that construction can continue without interruption.
Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder emphasized the critical need for timely action in maintaining the nation's transport infrastructure. He stated that any delay in these projects could have significant repercussions for public safety and the efficiency of the transport network.
In mid-July, the Autobahn GmbH had announced a suspension of tendering processes for 2025 due to a lack of funds. This pause raised alarms about possible significant delays in bridge renovations, as the necessary funds from a proposed multi-billion euro special infrastructure fund had not yet been allocated.
With the recently secured funding, the Autobahn GmbH can now fully utilize the EUR2.5 billion earmarked for bridge and tunnel renovations this year. High-priority projects include major highways such as the A7 and A3, which are vital for national transport.
The financial ministry reported alarming increases in the backlog of necessary repairs and renovations, indicating a serious impact on traffic safety. The approved funds are categorized as 'extra-budgetary expenditures,' which will cover both bridge renovations and road repairs that are directly linked to maintenance efforts.
Florian Oßner, a representative from the CSU, noted the importance of swiftly lifting the tendering freeze to prevent any holdups in transportation projects across the country. He expressed satisfaction that collaborative efforts from both coalition and opposition members of the budget committee successfully halted a proposal to redirect funds, a move that could have caused further delays in the urgently needed renovations.
Moreover, the financial ministry's request to the budget committee specified that these funds are essential for promptly executing critical bridge and tunnel construction and road rehabilitation initiatives. The Autobahn GmbH is responsible for the planning, construction, and maintenance of the country's highways, with a significant focus on addressing the numerous aging bridges in need of repair. The head of the German Construction Industry Association, Tim-Oliver Müller, remarked that the newly released investment funds will enable the Autobahn GmbH to continue vital projects.
