BSW Leadership Criticizes Crumbach Following Coalition Collapse in Brandenburg

Sun 11th Jan, 2026

The leadership of the Bündnis Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW) in Brandenburg is undertaking an internal review after a turbulent week saw the collapse of its coalition government with the Social Democratic Party (SPD), followed by several high-profile resignations. The party's remaining representatives in the Brandenburg state parliament have issued a statement acknowledging the need to examine their recent actions and address the uncertainty experienced by party members, supporters, and voters.

After the end of the coalition, the BSW experienced a wave of departures that included all three BSW ministers and several lawmakers. The remaining nine members of the parliamentary group emphasized their intention to regain public trust while maintaining that their chosen path remains in the best interest of the party. They also committed to a thorough analysis of their own decisions and actions.

Internal Strife and Parliamentary Fallout

The internal challenges for the BSW intensified after the coalition's dissolution. The resignations of key figures, including Finance Minister Robert Crumbach, led to a sharp reduction in the size of the party's parliamentary group. During a special session of the Brandenburg state parliament, former BSW members voiced strong criticism of the party leadership, questioning the suitability of the current parliamentary group chairman and highlighting deep divisions within the party.

The remaining BSW parliamentary members, now a significantly diminished group, voted alongside the Alternative for Germany (AfD) in favor of dissolving the parliament. However, the motion did not achieve the necessary two-thirds majority to pass. The move was met with disapproval from former Health Minister Britta Müller, who characterized the joint vote with the AfD as a breach of political norms. Brandenburg's Minister-President Dietmar Woidke (SPD) cited this development as a justification for ending the coalition with the BSW.

Leadership Disputes and Accusations

Within the BSW, the party leadership has assigned significant responsibility for the recent upheaval to former Finance Minister Crumbach. Party chair Fabio De Masi accused Crumbach and his allies of orchestrating a deliberate effort to undermine the party's position in Potsdam and criticized them for allegedly acting against the established party line. The conflict reportedly originated from disagreements over media policy, particularly regarding two state media agreements that the BSW parliamentary group opposed, but which the BSW ministers had previously endorsed in the cabinet. This divergence led to increasing friction between Crumbach and the rest of the parliamentary group.

The BSW leadership contends that Crumbach actively worked against the party's direction and prepared for the coalition breakdown with the SPD. According to the party, Crumbach organized support within the ranks before resigning and contributed to the collapse of the governing coalition. In response, Crumbach has denied all allegations, stating that he had encouraged party chair De Masi to become involved in resolving the internal disputes, a request he claims was not acted upon.

Future Prospects for the BSW

The recent events have left the BSW in Brandenburg facing significant challenges. With the loss of several prominent figures and a diminished presence in the state parliament, the party must now focus on restoring internal unity and public confidence. The BSW leadership has reiterated its commitment to its principles and to representing the interests of Brandenburg's citizens, while distancing itself from political maneuvering or personal advancement.

As the party undergoes a period of reflection and reassessment, its ability to address internal divisions and regain public trust will be crucial for its future role in Brandenburg's political landscape.
