Suspect Identified in CDC Shooting Incident in Georgia
ATLANTA -- Authorities have confirmed the identity of the shooter involved in the recent incident at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as 30-year-old Patrick Joseph White from Kennesaw, Georgia. The shooting, which occurred on Friday, resulted in the death of Officer David Rose, a member of the DeKalb County Police Department.
According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI), the gunfire erupted outside the CDC headquarters, with bullets striking multiple windows across the extensive campus. Tragically, Officer Rose was killed during the attack, and the shooter was later found deceased in a nearby building. The circumstances surrounding his death remain under investigation, with officials yet to determine whether it was self-inflicted or a result of police action.
In a statement, Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens referred to the shooter as a "known individual with certain interests," although specifics about those interests have not been disclosed. The gunman was reportedly armed with a long gun, and investigators recovered three additional firearms from the scene.
Fortunately, no other injuries were reported during the chaotic event, which prompted a significant response from law enforcement agencies to one of the nation's leading public health institutions. Images shared by CDC employees depicted several buildings with bullet-damaged windows, highlighting the scale of the incident at a site dedicated to critical health research.
The motive behind White's actions is still unclear as the investigation progresses. Mayor Dickens emphasized that understanding the reasons for the attack will require time and thorough analysis from the GBI. The agency has indicated that the complexity of the scene necessitates extensive evidence collection and numerous interviews.
Officer David Rose, who was 33 years old, was a former Marine with service in Afghanistan. He had recently graduated from the police academy in March, quickly gaining admiration from his colleagues for his commitment and professionalism. DeKalb County CEO Lorraine Cochran-Johnson expressed condolences, highlighting the impact of the officer's loss on his family, including a wife and three children, one of whom is unborn.
The GBI has taken the lead in the ongoing investigation, emphasizing the need for a thorough process to uncover all relevant details regarding the tragic event. As the situation develops, authorities continue to urge the public for patience while they work to gather all necessary information.
