Nigeria and Gabon Battle for World Cup Qualification in Rabat

Thu 13th Nov, 2025

Nigeria and Gabon are competing in the semi-final play-off of African qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with both teams seeking a place in the final against either Cameroon or DR Congo. The winner of this match will move one step closer to earning a spot in the intercontinental play-offs scheduled for March, where additional berths for the expanded 48-team tournament will be determined.

The match is being held in Rabat, Morocco, but attendance is sparse, with far fewer spectators than the stadium's 22,000-seat capacity. In response to low ticket sales, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) allowed fans with tickets for the Africa Cup of Nations to attend this fixture free of charge, but this measure has not significantly increased the crowd size.

Nigeria, led on the field by Wilfred Ndidi in the absence of regular captain William Troost-Ekong, adopted a flexible formation, alternating between a 4-2-2-2 and a 4-2-4 setup. Ndidi, a former Leicester City midfielder, was shown an early yellow card for a challenge on a Gabonese opponent. The team's attacking options include Ademola Lookman, Akor Adams, Victor Osimhen, and Samuel Chukwueze, who have all been actively involved in the opening stages.

Gabon, captained by the experienced Bruno Ecuele Manga, demonstrated composure in defense. Ecuele Manga, who holds over 110 caps for his country, has been instrumental in organizing Gabon's back line. The Gabonese side also features notable players such as Denis Bouanga and Mario Lemina, who have contributed to their team's efforts both in defense and attack.

Early in the match, Nigeria created a significant opportunity when Akor Adams found himself unmarked inside Gabon's penalty area, but Gabonese goalkeeper Mbaba reacted quickly to prevent the opening goal. Osimhen expressed frustration that the ball was not squared to him for a potentially easier finish. Both teams continued to press forward, with Nigeria controlling possession and Gabon seeking to capitalize on counter-attacks.

Several incidents involving laser pointers were observed during the match, with green lights seemingly directed toward both Nigerian and Gabonese players. These incidents, which appeared to be attempts to distract the athletes, are being investigated by match officials, as the use of such devices is prohibited in football stadiums.

Ademola Lookman, a standout performer for Nigeria this season with Atalanta, has continued his strong club form on the international stage. His work rate and creativity have been highlighted as key assets for the Nigerian side, alongside the experience of Alex Iwobi, who is making his 90th appearance for the national team.

On the Gabonese side, Ecuele Manga's leadership and defensive skills remain vital, while Denis Bouanga's attacking runs and ability to win set pieces have posed challenges for Nigeria's defense. Both teams have displayed tactical discipline, with Nigeria focusing on building from the midfield and Gabon relying on organized defensive play and quick transitions.

The World Cup qualification process for 2026 sees 28 teams already confirmed for the tournament, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. African teams are competing for remaining slots, with this play-off stage determining which nations will advance to the final round of qualification or enter the intercontinental play-offs. In total, 20 more places are still to be decided in the coming months, with six of those to be determined through the inter-confederation play-offs.

As the match progresses, both Nigeria and Gabon remain focused on securing a place in the next stage of qualification. The outcome of this encounter will not only impact their World Cup ambitions but could also influence squad selections and tactical approaches as the teams prepare for future international competitions.
