Minke Whale Found Dead After Boat Collision Off New Jersey
BARNEGAT TOWNSHIP, N.J. -- A minke whale has been reported dead following a collision with a small boat in Barnegat Bay, New Jersey, which occurred on Saturday afternoon. The incident, captured on social media, showed the 20-foot (6-meter) whale splashing near the vessel after the impact, which nearly caused the boat to capsize and ejected a passenger into the water. Fortunately, the individual was able to stay afloat next to the boat.
Marine authorities later discovered the deceased whale resting on a sandbar in shallow waters. Due to challenging tidal conditions, officials from the Marine Mammal Stranding Center were unable to approach the animal immediately. Jay Pagel, the stranding coordinator at the center, indicated that their assessment of the whale's condition was hindered by limited visibility. However, initial observations revealed no obvious external injuries on the side of the whale that was visible.
Reports suggest that the whale may have sustained injuries prior to the collision. Additional footage shared online seems to show the whale colliding with a pontoon boat shortly after the initial incident. In light of these developments, the marine authorities plan to tow the whale to a state park for a necropsy on Monday morning to determine the cause of death.
This unfortunate event underscores the ongoing challenges faced by marine wildlife in busy coastal areas, particularly as recreational boating increases. The Marine Mammal Stranding Center emphasizes the importance of reporting any sightings of stranded or injured marine animals to ensure timely and appropriate responses.
