LOS ANGELES -- Loni Anderson, known for her iconic role as the savvy receptionist Jennifer Marlowe on the classic television series WKRP in Cincinnati, has passed away. She died on Sunday in a Los Angeles hospital following a lengthy illness, just shy of her 80th birthday. This news was confirmed by her publicist, Cheryl J. Kagan.
In a heartfelt statement, Anderson's family expressed their sorrow, describing her as a cherished wife, mother, and grandmother. WKRP in Cincinnati originally aired from 1978 to 1982, showcasing the challenges faced by a struggling radio station in Ohio as it attempted to revitalize itself with a rock music format. The show featured a talented ensemble cast including Gary Sandy, Tim Reid, Howard Hesseman, Frank Bonner, and Jan Smithers, with Anderson's performance as Jennifer Marlowe earning her two Emmy nominations and three Golden Globe nominations.
Anderson's portrayal of the glamorous yet intelligent receptionist was integral to the show's charm. She was adept at managing the chaos around her, often shielding her boss, Mr. Carlson, from unnecessary distractions while maintaining the station's operations amid various challenges.
Beyond her television fame, Anderson starred alongside Burt Reynolds in the 1983 comedy Stroker Ace. The two later married, becoming prominent figures in tabloid headlines until their separation in 1994.
Reflecting on their relationship, Anderson shared that their son, Quinton Reynolds, was a highlight of their time together. She noted that the initial phase of their relationship was filled with media scrutiny, which posed challenges but ultimately led to personal growth.
In her 1995 autobiography, Anderson discussed her journey through fame and personal trials, emphasizing resilience and personal development.
In her lifetime, Anderson was married four times, most recently to Bob Flick in 2008. Born on August 5, 1945, in St. Paul, Minnesota, she hailed from a family with diverse backgrounds, including a father who worked as an environmental chemist and a mother who was a model.
Anderson's acting career began with minor roles, including her first appearance in the film Nevada Smith in 1966. She gained recognition through guest spots on series like S.W.A.T. and Police Woman before achieving stardom with WKRP.
After the series concluded, she appeared in the short-lived sitcom Easy Street and various made-for-TV movies. More recently, in 2023, she co-starred in Lifetime's Ladies Of The 80s: A Divas Christmas, alongside notable actresses like Linda Gray and Morgan Fairchild.
In response to her passing, Morgan Fairchild expressed her sadness on social media, recalling Anderson as a gracious and sweet individual.
Anderson leaves behind her husband, children, grandchildren, and stepfamily. A private service is anticipated at Hollywood Forever Cemetery.
