Jurickson Profar of the Braves Receives 80-Game Suspension for PED Violation

Tue 1st Apr, 2025

In a significant development for Major League Baseball, Atlanta Braves outfielder Jurickson Profar has been handed an 80-game suspension without pay due to violations of the league's performance-enhancing drug policy. The suspension takes immediate effect following a positive test for Chorionic Gonadotrophin (hCG), a hormone associated with testosterone production, as outlined by the league's joint drug prevention and treatment program.

Profar's suspension means he will forfeit approximately $5.8 million of his $12 million salary and will not be eligible to participate in postseason games. He is set to return on June 29 against the Philadelphia Phillies, assuming no games are postponed during his suspension.

In a statement regarding the suspension, Profar expressed deep disappointment and emphasized his love for the game, stating that this day is one of the most challenging of his professional career. He reiterated his commitment to integrity in sports, highlighting that he has undergone numerous tests throughout his career without any prior issues.

Braves' manager Brian Snitker addressed the team following the announcement, acknowledging the emotional toll on Profar while also focusing on the opportunity this presents for other players to step up in his absence. The Braves are currently dealing with a series of injuries within the team, including the loss of star outfielder Ronald Acuña Jr. due to a prior injury.

Profar, who has been an impactful player for the Braves, was previously an All-Star and received a Silver Slugger award last season, boasting a batting average of .280 along with 24 home runs and 85 RBIs. He joined the Braves in the offseason with a three-year, $42 million contract.

This incident marks the second suspension for the Braves related to performance-enhancing drugs, following pitcher Andrew McKirahan's similar fate in 2015. The league has seen a rise in suspensions this season, with Profar being the fourth player penalized for drug violations. Other recent suspensions include minor league players who tested positive for banned substances.

As the Braves navigate this latest challenge, Snitker remains confident in his team's resilience. He noted that the players have adapted to various adversities over recent seasons and are well-equipped to continue performing at a high level.

In response to Profar's suspension, the Braves have made roster adjustments, including acquiring outfielder Stuart Fairchild from the Cincinnati Reds, who had a modest performance last season.
