Unbeaten Filly Good Cheer Triumphs in 151st Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Despite challenging conditions on a muddy track and an unsteady start, the unbeaten filly Good Cheer demonstrated her prowess by winning the 151st Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs. The race, held on Friday, saw Good Cheer rally on the outside to secure a 2 1/4 length victory over her nearest competitor, Tenma.
Good Cheer, the heavy 6-5 favorite, completed the 1 1/8-mile race in a time of 1:50.15. With Luis Saez in the saddle, she delivered her seventh consecutive victory, further solidifying her reputation as a formidable contender. The bay filly, a product of Megdalia d'Oro and Wedding Toast by Street, entered the Oaks with an impressive cumulative victory margin exceeding 42 lengths, which she extended with her commanding performance on Friday.
The victory at the Oaks adds to Good Cheer's series of graded stakes wins, which have been accumulating since last fall. The triumph was celebrated with a garland of pink lilies, a symbolic reward for her remarkable achievement.
Saez, reflecting on the race, expressed confidence in Good Cheer's abilities. He acknowledged the nerves that come with such a significant event but emphasized his belief in her talent, stating that he felt assured she would make a significant move during the race.
Trainer Brad Cox, who grew up nearby, celebrated his third Oaks win in seven years, while Saez secured his second in three attempts. The ownership group, Godolphin LLC, marked its second Oaks win in three years and is now setting its sights on the Kentucky Derby, hoping to claim their first victory with Sovereignty and East Avenue.
Cox's recent success follows a notable performance by another filly, Immersive, who won last year's Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies and earned the Eclipse Award for the top 2-year-old. The trainer took satisfaction in Good Cheer's execution, particularly given the pressure of being the overwhelming favorite among a field of 13 horses.
Good Cheer's journey through the race was marked by a strategic approach. After a slow start from the No. 11 post, she remained within range of the leaders before making her move in the final turns. By the time she entered the stretch, she had advanced to fourth place and quickly pulled ahead to secure her victory, marking her second win in muddy conditions at Churchill Downs.
Michael Banahan of Godolphin LLC expressed his contentment with Good Cheer's positioning during the race, noting that she was well-managed by Saez and appeared comfortable throughout the race.
In terms of the race results, Drexel Hill finished second, returning $21.02 and $11.76, while Bless the Broken took third place, with a return of $4.78. The race faced a slight delay due to a thunderstorm that swept through the area about two hours before the scheduled post time. The wet conditions prompted many of the 100,910 fans in attendance to seek shelter, but Good Cheer's performance remained unaffected by the weather.
