Investigation Underway Following Discovery of Gene Hackman and Wife's Bodies
SANTA FE, N.M. -- The lifeless bodies of acclaimed actor Gene Hackman, his wife Betsy Arakawa, and their dog were found at their residence in Santa Fe, New Mexico, raising concerns among investigators about the circumstances surrounding their deaths. Initial reports suggest the couple had been deceased for an undetermined period before a maintenance worker stumbled upon them on Wednesday.
According to a spokesperson from the sheriff's office, there were no visible signs of gunshot wounds or injuries indicative of foul play. However, the Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office has stated that the nature of the deaths is suspicious enough to warrant an extensive investigation.
The 95-year-old Hackman was located in an entryway of the home, while 65-year-old Arakawa was found lying on her side in the bathroom, next to a space heater that may have fallen during her collapse, as per the details mentioned in a search warrant affidavit.
The New Mexico Gas Company conducted tests on the gas lines in the vicinity following the discovery of the bodies, but initially reported no issues. Additionally, the Fire Department found no evidence of a carbon monoxide leak or poisoning. Nonetheless, a detective noted that gas poisoning symptoms might not always be apparent.
As the investigation continues, detectives are exploring various theories, including potential gas poisoning, although no definitive conclusions have been reached. The search warrant revealed that a German shepherd was found deceased in a bathroom closet near Arakawa, while two healthy dogs were also present on the property.
Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza addressed the media, stating, "There was no indication of a struggle and nothing appeared to be missing or disturbed in the home." Results from the autopsies are still pending, with toxicology tests being conducted to ascertain the exact cause of death.
Hackman, known for his versatile acting career spanning over four decades, garnered widespread acclaim for his performances in a range of films. His roles included memorable characters in classics such as "The French Connection" and "Unforgiven." Tributes from fellow actors and filmmakers have poured in, highlighting his contributions to cinema.
In the years following his retirement from acting in the early 2000s, Hackman found solace in his life in Santa Fe alongside Arakawa, a concert pianist he married in the late 1980s. The couple had settled in a beautifully designed home that offered stunning views of the surrounding landscape.
Authorities reported that the maintenance worker who discovered the bodies had observed the front door of the home left open. He contacted law enforcement after noticing the couple's bodies through a window. The last known contact with the homeowners was approximately two weeks prior to the discovery.
As the investigation unfolds, the community reflects on the legacy of Hackman, whose profound impact on the film industry remains indelible.
