Wildfire Response Intensifies in Evia as Crete Fire Contained
Firefighters are engaged in a significant battle against a wildfire on the Greek island of Evia, which has led to the evacuation of two villages as flames consume local forests. The blaze ignited late on Friday and has prompted an extensive response from emergency services, including over 160 firefighters supported by 46 fire engines and five aircraft. This effort is concentrated in southern Evia, a region characterized by its rugged terrain and agricultural landscape, located east of Athens.
Authorities initially ordered the evacuation of the villages of Tsakeoi and Limnionas, a popular seasonal settlement, in the early hours of Saturday morning. This proactive measure comes as Evia and several other parts of Greece are placed on high alert due to the forecast of strong winds, which are expected to exacerbate the fire conditions.
The wildfire in Evia is the latest incident in a series of fires that have been fueled by a combination of high temperatures and dry conditions across Europe. This week, much of the continent has been experiencing a heatwave that has been linked to at least eight fatalities in various locations.
In contrast, a separate wildfire on the southern island of Crete, which has been raging since Wednesday and has destroyed extensive areas of forest and olive groves, is reportedly nearing containment. This situation has necessitated the temporary evacuation of thousands of both residents and tourists, highlighting the impact of these wildfires on Greece's vital tourism sector, particularly at the onset of the peak summer holiday season.
As temperatures in Greece are predicted to soar to around 38 degrees Celsius (100 degrees Fahrenheit) on Saturday, the country, along with other Mediterranean regions, is grappling with the reality of being situated in a wildfire-prone area. Scientific assessments have categorized this part of the world as a 'wildfire hotspot,' where hot and dry summers often lead to destructive blazes. The increasing severity of these fires in recent years has prompted calls for a reevaluation of fire management strategies in light of changing climatic conditions.
