Chiefs Starters, Including Mahomes, Set to Compete in Preseason Opener

In a notable decision, Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid has confirmed that quarterback Patrick Mahomes and the team's starters will take the field for their preseason opener against the Arizona Cardinals this Saturday evening. Mahomes expressed his appreciation for the opportunity, acknowledging that while he doesn't relish the prospect of being hit, he understands its importance in preparing for the upcoming season.

In recent years, many teams have opted to rest their key players during preseason games to mitigate the risk of injuries. For instance, the Philadelphia Eagles, last year's Super Bowl champions, chose not to play their starters at all during the preseason. However, Reid and Mahomes believe that getting game experience is crucial, even if it means facing a hit or two.

Mahomes noted that the initial contact during a game serves as a wake-up call, helping players get into the right mindset. Although the starters may only participate for a single series, the plan is for each quarterback to play a full quarter: Mahomes in the first, Gardner Minshew in the second, Bailey Zappe in the third, and Chris Oladokun in the fourth.

The Chiefs aim to evaluate several aspects of their team in this preseason match, particularly the revamped offensive line. First-round draft pick Josh Simmons has already garnered attention as the new left tackle, while Kingsley Suamataia is poised to step in for two-time All-Pro Joe Thuney at left guard. After a Super Bowl loss highlighted the need for upgrades on the left side, the Chiefs have made significant investments in their offensive line through both draft picks and financial resources.

Additionally, competition for the final wide receiver spots will be closely watched, especially with Rashee Rice currently sidelined due to a groin injury and Marquise Brown dealing with an ankle issue. Mahomes emphasized the importance of the younger players stepping up during this critical time, advocating for them to apply what they've learned during training camp. He highlighted Coach Reid's ability to prepare the team effectively for game situations.

On the Cardinals' side, head coach Jonathan Gannon has also decided to play his starters, marking a shift from previous seasons where he opted to keep key players off the field during preseason games. Gannon noted that the current health and development of the team make it a suitable time for the starters to gain valuable game experience.

Noteworthy moments from the Chiefs' practice included Hall of Fame wide receiver Terrell Owens observing the team, as he previously played under Reid in Philadelphia. Former Raiders coach Antonio Pierce has also been contributing to the camp by assisting Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. In terms of player health, cornerback Kristian Fulton has returned to individual drills after coming off the PUP list, and linebacker Drue Tranquill also made his way back to practice.
