Buffalo Bills Sign Josh Allen to Historic $330 Million Contract Extension
The Buffalo Bills have secured quarterback Josh Allen with a remarkable contract extension valued at $330 million, which includes an unprecedented $250 million in guaranteed money. This new agreement positions Allen among the highest-paid players in the National Football League. The Bills confirmed the extension, although the specifics were initially disclosed to the Associated Press by anonymous sources familiar with the deal.
This contract adds two years to Allen's existing deal, ensuring his presence with the team through the 2030 season. The previous record for guaranteed money in an NFL contract was set by Cleveland's Deshaun Watson in 2022, who received $230 million over five years.
Allen's contract extension follows a stellar seventh season in which he earned NFL MVP honors, marking him as the Bills' third player to achieve this recognition, the first being Hall of Famer Thurman Thomas in 1991. The new terms of his contract surpass a prior six-year, $258 million contract he signed in August 2021.
In terms of annual average salary, Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott leads the league with a four-year, $240 million contract, which breaks down to $60 million per season.
Throughout his career, Allen has established himself as an elite quarterback, setting numerous franchise records for passing and scoring. His journey to success has been marked by overcoming early criticisms regarding his accuracy and development as a player after being selected seventh overall in the 2018 NFL Draft from Wyoming.
Under Allen's leadership, the Bills have enjoyed significant success, including five consecutive AFC East titles and a six-year playoff streak. His MVP season saw him navigate challenges, including a depleted receiving corps. Despite trading top receiver Stefon Diggs and losing another key target, Gabe Davis, to free agency, Allen managed to lead the team to a strong 13-win season.
Although he did not exceed 4,000 passing yards for the first time since 2019, he achieved his most efficient season yet, with a career-low six interceptions. In total, he threw for 28 touchdowns and added 12 rushing touchdowns, also contributing a touchdown pass that was later returned to him for a score.
Despite his individual accolades, Allen is still pursuing a Super Bowl appearance, having reached the AFC championship game twice, only to fall short against Kansas City.
This contract extension coincides with a positive personal development for Allen, who recently proposed to actress and singer Hailee Steinfeld during the team's bye week. Their relationship, which began in the spring of 2023, has been a source of support and motivation for the quarterback.
The new contract is anticipated to provide the Bills with much-needed salary cap flexibility as they enter the new business year. The team had been facing potential cap constraints, especially after the release of veteran edge rusher Von Miller.
In addition, the team's general manager has been proactive in securing the roster's young core by extending contracts for key players, including fourth-year edge rusher Greg Rousseau and third-year linebacker Terrel Bernard.
As a two-time All-Pro, Allen boasts impressive statistics that include the most wins (76), total touchdowns (262), and total yards (30,595) by any NFL player within their first seven seasons. He also holds multiple single-season franchise records, including passing yards, touchdown passes, and completion percentage.
