Apple TV+ Dominates Emmy Nominations with 'Severance' Leading the Pack
LOS ANGELES -- In a remarkable display of acclaim, the Apple TV+ series "Severance" has garnered a staggering 27 nominations for the upcoming Emmy Awards, solidifying its position as a frontrunner this year. The show, which explores dystopian themes in a workplace setting, has captured both critical praise and audience attention during its second season.
Following closely in the comedy category, "The Studio" has made a significant impact with a record-equalling 23 nominations, matching the previous year's tally held by "The Bear." This marks a notable achievement for Apple TV+, highlighting its increasing presence in the competitive television landscape.
Apple TV+ head of programming expressed satisfaction over the nominations, emphasizing the quality and ambition of the nominated shows. "Severance" not only earned nominations for its lead actors, Adam Scott and Britt Lower, who were recognized for their dual portrayals, but also for supporting performances by Tramell Tillman and Patricia Arquette. Additionally, Ben Stiller received a nomination for directing the Season 2 finale, further showcasing the show's strong creative team.
Meanwhile, "The Studio," a satirical take on Hollywood, exceeded expectations in its first season. Co-created by Seth Rogen, the series features a host of notable guest stars, leading to multiple nominations in various categories. Rogen himself received nominations for acting, writing, and directing, highlighting his multifaceted contributions to the show.
In the limited series category, HBO's "The Penguin" made a surprising mark with 24 nominations, including key recognitions for lead actors Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti. Netflix's acclaimed limited series "Adolescence" followed, obtaining 13 nominations, including a standout nod for 15-year-old Owen Cooper, who may become the youngest Emmy winner in over four decades.
HBO's "The White Lotus" continued its trend of recognition, securing 23 nominations for its third season, which featured an ensemble cast including Carrie Coon and Walton Goggins. "The Pitt," another HBO series, also performed well with 13 nominations, including a nod for Noah Wyle as best actor.
Despite the dominant presence of streaming services, traditional broadcast networks struggled to make a significant impact, with CBS's "Matlock" earning a solitary nomination for Kathy Bates, who stands as a strong contender in the best actress category.
As the Emmy Awards approach, HBO leads the nominations with a total of 142, followed by Netflix with 120 and Apple TV+ with 79. The competition remains fierce as the industry continues to evolve in the streaming era. The 77th Primetime Emmy Awards will take place on September 14, with CBS hosting the ceremony.
