High Risk of Forest Fires Across Large Areas of Brandenburg

Tue 15th Apr, 2025

A significant risk of forest fires currently prevails in many parts of Brandenburg, particularly in the northern regions where six counties have been designated a danger level of 4, indicating a high likelihood of fires. Alarmingly, the Prignitz area in northwest Brandenburg has reached the maximum danger level of 5.

For the remaining seven counties in central and southern Brandenburg, a medium risk level of 3 has been reported, according to data from the state forestry ministry. Over the past few weeks, there have been several localized forest fires in Brandenburg, although these incidents were quickly contained and extinguished.

As the Easter holiday approaches, organizers of traditional Easter bonfires are closely monitoring weather conditions, particularly concerning strong winds, as bonfires may be prohibited once the fire danger level hits 4. The forecast from the German Weather Service (DWD) suggests that thunderstorms could occur in Prignitz on Wednesday, with temperatures expected to exceed 25 degrees Celsius. A slight chance of showers is anticipated on Holy Thursday.

Brandenburg's forest law stipulates that open fires are not permitted within 50 meters of forest boundaries. This regulation extends to grilling near lakes that are close to wooded areas. Recently, a fire broke out in Herzberg, located in the Ostprignitz-Ruppin district, during a birthday celebration due to fireworks, which reportedly ignited a nearby field through sparks.
