The coalition government of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) and the Brandenburg State Party (BSW) is taking action to address the unregulated expansion of wind energy facilities in Brandenburg. This initiative comes in response to ongoing disputes regarding the placement of new wind turbines in various districts.
In a recent discussion, the coalition agreed on the necessity of a moratorium to halt the development of wind power installations outside designated planning zones. This decision aims to establish clearer guidelines and prevent conflicts arising from the unplanned proliferation of wind energy projects.
Kurt Fischer, the general secretary of the SPD, emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating that the uncontrolled spread of wind turbines in areas lacking a regional planning framework has become a significant concern. He highlighted the need for a definitive measure to curb this expansion until reliable regulations and plans are established, which could ultimately lead to reduced electricity costs in Brandenburg.
BSW state chair Friederike Benda echoed these sentiments, asserting that without updated regional plans and structured processes, it is crucial to postpone new wind energy projects. She argued that fostering genuine public acceptance for the energy transition requires the inclusion of local communities in the decision-making process and the implementation of well-organized procedures.
To formalize this approach, the SPD and BSW factions plan to submit a proposal for the upcoming Landtag session. Furthermore, Brandenburg intends to support initiatives from neighboring Mecklenburg-Vorpommern aimed at improving public acceptance for the expansion of wind power.
Currently, Brandenburg has a higher number of operational wind turbines compared to many other federal states, underscoring the importance of this issue for local governance and energy policy.
