Brandenburg has reported a substantial financial shortfall for the previous fiscal year, closing with a deficit estimated at approximately 872 million euros. This marks a significant departure from the two preceding years, which saw the region operate with a budget surplus.
According to a statement from the regional finance ministry, the primary factors contributing to this deficit include increased expenditures and lower-than-expected tax revenues due to a sluggish economy. Finance Minister Robert Crumbach indicated that the anticipated deficit had been forecasted months in advance, with estimates suggesting it could reach around 900 million euros.
In addressing the financial situation, Crumbach remarked that the figures underscore a troubling reality about the fiscal management of the state, suggesting that Brandenburg may be living beyond its means. He emphasized the need for structural reforms in the upcoming budget plan for 2025 and 2026 to stabilize the financial situation.
The proposed strategy to address the deficit involves utilizing the state's general reserve, which is expected to diminish significantly from 1.586 billion euros to approximately 714.3 million euros. Crumbach noted that the remaining reserves would likely be depleted over the next two years, as an allocation of 350 million euros is planned for each year to cover essential expenditures.
The state legislature aims to finalize the dual budget for 2025 and 2026 by June. The draft of this budget, which was approved by the cabinet at the end of March, outlines expenditures of 16.7 billion euros for the current year and 17.4 billion euros for the following year, with a plan to incur about one billion euros in new debt annually.
As Brandenburg navigates this challenging financial landscape, the focus will be on implementing effective fiscal policies that will address the current deficit while ensuring sustainable economic growth for the future.
