The German Minister of Defense has defended the substantial increase in defense spending outlined in the federal budget, stating that these enhanced expenditures are essential. He emphasized the need for rapid and complete equipping of the Bundeswehr, underscoring that defense is not merely an option, but a fundamental state responsibility that must be prioritized.
The current budget proposals from the coalition government indicate a plan to triple defense spending by 2029. This initiative aims to rectify years of underinvestment in military equipment and meet Germany's commitments within NATO. For the current fiscal year, defense funding is set to rise by approximately EUR10 billion, bringing the total to EUR62.4 billion, alongside an additional EUR24 billion from a special fund.
In the upcoming weeks, the Bundestag will deliberate on potential amendments before the budget is finalized after the summer recess. The budget is projected to gradually increase to EUR152.8 billion by 2029.
The Minister acknowledged that the substantial figures related to defense expenditures may be challenging for many citizens. This unprecedented increase in military funding has been facilitated by a collaborative effort among various political parties. Prior to the establishment of the current coalition government, the Union and the SPD, along with the Greens, had relaxed the debt brake concerning defense spending.
Addressing the need for additional personnel, the Minister pointed out that the armed forces require a considerable increase in manpower. Specifically, he indicated that a minimum of 60,000 additional soldiers and 200,000 reservists are necessary to comply with NATO standards, with the current number of active soldiers in the Bundeswehr standing at 182,000.
To achieve these staffing objectives, a new military service initiative is being introduced to attract more volunteers to the Bundeswehr. The Minister expressed optimism about this initiative's potential to enhance recruitment, noting a positive trend in attracting new personnel. He is confident that the new military service will further bolster this trend.
In parallel, the Chancellor has articulated his vision of transforming the Bundeswehr into a model army within NATO. He outlined plans for extensive procurement of new equipment, with a particular focus on integrating advanced technologies. Additionally, he emphasized the importance of strengthening both the German and European defense industries through collaborative procurement efforts with European partners.
