Bolsonaro Condemns Coup Allegations Against Him in Brazil

On February 19, 2025, Brazilian Attorney General Paulo Gonet Branco filed charges claiming Bolsonaro orchestrated a criminal enterprise that intended to compromise the nation's electronic voting system. The allegations extend to accusations of plotting to assassinate Lula, Vice President Geraldo Alckmin, and Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes.

In a response shared via social media, Bolsonaro characterized these charges as politically motivated and part of a broader campaign to suppress dissent. He expressed concerns over what he perceives as a recurring tactic in certain countries where opposition figures are labeled as coup conspirators. Meanwhile, President Lula has stated that Bolsonaro and the other individuals facing charges are entitled to a fair defense. Lula remarked that should the judicial system determine their guilt, they must face appropriate consequences, but if found innocent, they will be exonerated.

The charges against Bolsonaro are notably linked to the events of January 8, 2023, when pro-Bolsonaro supporters stormed key government institutions in Brasília, including the Supreme Court and the presidential palace, in an attempt to thwart Lula's presidency shortly after his inauguration. At the time, Bolsonaro was residing in Florida, USA.
