The Chairman of the German Bishops' Conference, Georg Bätzing, has expressed grave concerns regarding the transformation of the United States into an authoritarian state. In his Easter Vigil sermon delivered in Limburg, Bätzing reflected on the inauguration of President Donald Trump, stating that it marked the beginning of a troubling new era.

Bätzing criticized the ongoing erosion of democratic structures in North America, highlighting issues such as attacks on media freedom, pressure on government officials, the abrupt closure of borders, and the unilateral withdrawal from international agreements. He noted that the imposition of tariffs on trading partners further complicates the international landscape.

He remarked on the emergence of a new style of international politics characterized by deceit and public humiliation, drawing parallels to darker historical periods when powerful nations disregarded the sovereignty of smaller countries in their quest for influence. Bätzing conveyed that Europe finds itself ill-prepared for an uncertain future under these conditions.

Previously, the Catholic bishops had condemned the U.S. approach towards Ukraine, labeling it a "scandal" and criticizing the Trump administration's actions as "irresponsible." Bätzing emphasized that attempts to forge closer ties with Russian President Vladimir Putin, coupled with coercive tactics regarding resource supplies, effectively abandon Ukraine in the face of aggression from Russia.

Furthermore, Bätzing addressed significant global events such as the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the attack on Israel by Hamas, all of which have contributed to a sense of instability. He posed a rhetorical question to his audience, asking if they felt as though they had awakened in a drastically changed world. Bätzing expressed the sentiment that many are overwhelmed, anxious, and unsettled by the rapid pace of change and its unpredictable consequences.

In conclusion, Bätzing called upon individuals to confront their fears and sorrow through the strength derived from Christian faith, asserting that the essence of the Easter celebration lies in offering hope and guidance to those seeking stability amidst uncertainty.
