Biosphäre Potsdam: Employees Urge City Council to Preserve Tropical Hall

Fri 21st Feb, 2025

Employees of the financially struggling Biosphäre Potsdam have reached out to the city council in a letter, urging them to take action to save the Tropical Hall, which houses a diverse range of exotic plants and animals. Amid ongoing discussions about potential closures due to budget constraints in the capital city, the staff of the Biosphäre, numbering around 90, have expressed their concerns about losing what they describe as a vital asset for the community.

In their communication, the employees implored city representatives, emphasizing the importance of the Tropical Hall not only as a unique attraction but also as an essential educational resource. They highlighted that the facility serves as a living classroom, providing invaluable learning opportunities for visitors of all ages. Furthermore, they warned that a closure would result in the destruction of an ecosystem that includes approximately 20,000 exotic plant species and 140 different animal species.

According to the employees, shutting down the Biosphäre would have severe repercussions for their livelihoods, jeopardizing not only their jobs but also their overall well-being and future prospects. As the city grapples with a significant budget shortfall, discussions about the potential closure of the facility are becoming increasingly urgent. A decision regarding the future of the Biosphäre is expected to be addressed in the city council meeting scheduled for March 6.

In addition to their direct appeal, supporters of the Biosphäre have been actively promoting an online petition advocating for the preservation of this beloved institution. In 2024, the Tropical Hall attracted nearly 180,000 visitors, underscoring its popularity and significance within the community.
