Berlinale Final Stretch: Who Will Take Home the Golden Bear?

Sat 22nd Feb, 2025

The Berlinale Film Festival is reaching its climax with 19 films vying for the prestigious Golden Bear award, which will be announced today. The question on everyone's mind is whether this year's closing gala will focus more on political themes than on the films themselves.

The award ceremony is set to begin at 18:00 and will be streamed live on the Berlinale website, hosted by Désirée Nosbusch. After last year's contentious discussions surrounding antisemitism triggered by remarks from some award winners, there is heightened anticipation for this evening's event. Organizers have ensured that moderators have received special training to steer the conversation back to cinema.

Last year's Golden Bear went to Mati Diop's film "Dahomey," but this year, several contenders have emerged as crowd favorites. A standout is the documentary "Timestamp" (original title: "Strichka chasu") by Ukrainian director Kateryna Gornostai. This poignant film reveals the impact of the ongoing Ukraine war on daily school life, offering a powerful perspective on the current crisis.

Gornostai's film has gained added significance in light of recent political developments, particularly with the new US administration's approach to relations with Russia. The film showcases Ukrainian voices and emphasizes the nation's struggles during these turbulent times.

The premiere in Berlin saw attendees waving Ukrainian flags, a testament to the film's emotional resonance. Gornostai, who was heavily pregnant at the time, also celebrated the birth of her child shortly before the festival.

Another notable contender is "The Blue Trail" (original title: "O último azul") by Brazilian director Gabriel Mascaro. This film tells the story of a senior woman facing deportation to an elder colony in a dystopian world, as she fights against the system and encounters various characters who provide her with new perspectives on life.

Denise Weinberg, who plays the lead role, is a strong candidate for the gender-neutral award for Best Actor. However, US actor Ethan Hawke, known for his role in Richard Linklater's "Blue Moon," is also in the running. Hawke portrays the late lyricist Lorenz Hart, delivering a captivating performance that blends humor and depth in a nearly monologue format.

Other female performers under consideration for acting accolades include Marion Cotillard, who portrayed a chilling ice queen in "La Tour de Glace," and Jessica Chastain, who impressed audiences with her role as a cold-hearted wealthy woman in the social drama "Dreams." Additionally, Rose Byrne made a memorable impact with her portrayal of an overwhelmed mother in "If I Had Legs I'd Kick You."

The Berlinale will conclude with a public day on February 23, allowing attendees to engage with the festival's events.
