Berlin Police Anticipate Relatively Peaceful May Day Amid Warnings for Journalists

Tue 22nd Apr, 2025

The Berlin police have expressed a cautiously optimistic outlook for this year's May Day celebrations, expecting minimal disturbances despite recent warnings regarding potential violence against journalists. According to a confidential assessment from the State Criminal Police Office, which was reported by local media, the likelihood of serious incidents associated with the demonstrations is currently considered low.

Authorities are preparing for a relatively peaceful turnout during the traditional 6 PM demonstration organized by leftist groups. However, the police have raised concerns specifically about the safety of media representatives. Past experiences have shown that journalists are sometimes viewed unfavorably by segments of the protestors, particularly within pro-Palestinian circles, where they may be accused of serving as instruments of disinformation.

The report indicates that established media figures have faced hostility, being labeled as part of the so-called 'lying press' and accused of colluding with Western or Zionist interests. The potential for verbal harassment and even physical attacks against journalists during the demonstrations is recognized as a real risk.

In addition to safeguarding journalists, police are closely monitoring specific areas along the planned route of the 'Revolutionary May Day' demonstration. Particular attention is directed toward the intersection of Sonnenallee and Reuterstraße, identified as a hotspot for possible unrest. This area has witnessed escalated protests since the outbreak of violence in the Israel-Palestine conflict, particularly following the Hamas assault on Israel in October 2023.

Last year, police made 34 arrests during May Day events, with 18 of those occurring at the 'Revolutionary May Day' demonstration. Offenses included severe breaches of public peace, physical assault, and incitement to hatred. Compared to previous years, the number of reported incidents has been decreasing, reflecting a shift in the nature of the demonstrations.

In recent times, the focus of the protests has shifted significantly towards the Israel-Palestine conflict rather than the traditional leftist themes that characterized earlier May Day events. The once predominant autonomous black bloc is now less visible, as the protests increasingly align with international political issues.

While the police remain vigilant, they are hopeful that this year's May Day will unfold with fewer incidents than in previous years, emphasizing a need for continuous monitoring and a proactive approach to ensure the safety of all participants, including the press.
