Berlin Launches Campaign to Combat Discrimination Against Intersex Individuals

Tue 1st Apr, 2025

Berlin has initiated a campaign aimed at fostering greater acceptance of intersex individuals, with a focus on reducing societal prejudices. The initiative, spearheaded by the city's Social Senator, aims to raise awareness about people with variations in sex characteristics that do not fit typical definitions of male or female.

Running through April 27, the campaign will showcase portraits of Berlin residents who identify as intersex at 250 locations throughout the city, as well as across various online platforms. The initiative seeks to create a more inclusive environment where intersex individuals can live without fear or shame.

The Social Senator emphasized the importance of recognizing intersex individuals as integral members of the community, actively contributing to the city's cultural and social landscape. According to government data, approximately one in every 60 residents in Berlin is intersex, with many individuals only becoming aware of their intersex status later in life. They may identify as women, men, non-binary, or use other self-descriptions.

In 2021, legislation was enacted prohibiting surgeries aimed at modifying the physical appearance of children with intersex traits to align with male or female norms. This law is designed to protect the bodily autonomy of intersex individuals and prevent severe health consequences from procedures performed without their consent.

The rationale behind the campaign is that a lack of knowledge and persistent misconceptions hinder the fight against discrimination. By shedding light on intersex identities and experiences, the campaign aims to foster understanding and acceptance within the broader community.
