Berlin Doctor Faces Murder Charges in Patient Deaths

Wed 16th Apr, 2025

Prosecutors in Berlin have initiated legal proceedings against a physician specializing in palliative care, charging him with 15 counts of murder. The allegations stem from claims that the doctor administered fatal doses of medication to his patients, with the intent to kill.

The accused, a 40-year-old man who was part of a nursing service's palliative care team, is said to have committed these acts between September 2021 and July 2024. Reports indicate that the physician allegedly administered an anesthetic induction drug followed by a muscle relaxant, actions taken without medical necessity or patient consent. This sequence is believed to have caused respiratory paralysis, leading to rapid death.

As part of the investigation, prosecutors have revealed that the suspect may have resorted to arson, setting fire to the homes of some victims to obscure his crimes. The deceased individuals ranged in age from 56 to 94 years old.

The doctor has been in custody since August 2024 and has yet to respond to the charges brought against him. Authorities are also pursuing a lifelong ban on his medical practice, as he has worked across multiple regions in Germany.

Following the initial suspicion, which arose from four unexplained deaths last year, the investigation has expanded significantly. Exhumations have been ordered, and inquiries into additional potential victims dating back to 2021 are ongoing, raising the possibility that the death toll could increase further.

As the case unfolds, an investigative team is meticulously analyzing the doctor's patient records to gather further evidence.
