Belgium Swears in New Right-Leaning Government Following Coalition Agreement

Mon 3rd Feb, 2025

Belgium has officially inaugurated a new government, marking a significant shift in its political landscape. Led by Bart De Wever from the nationalist party N-VA, this government emerges 240 days after the elections. The swearing-in ceremony took place at the Royal Palace in Brussels, where De Wever pledged allegiance in the country's three official languages: French, Dutch, and German.

De Wever, who previously served as the mayor of Antwerp, expressed readiness to commence his duties immediately after the ceremony. The formation of this government follows a lengthy negotiation period, during which the N-VA successfully allied with four other parties to form a coalition.

The newly formed coalition, referred to as the Arizona Coalition, includes the liberal MR party, the central party Les Engagés from the French-speaking Wallonia, as well as the Flemish Christian Democrats (CD&V) and Social Democrats (Vooruit). The coalition derives its name from the colors of its member parties, which align with those of the Arizona state flag: orange for CD&V, blue for MR and Les Engagés, red for Vooruit, and yellow for N-VA.

In this new government, the N-VA holds key ministerial positions, including the Minister of Defense, Theo Francken, the Minister of Migration, Anneleen Van Bossuyt, and the Minister of Finance, Jan Jambon. Jan Jambon is not new to the federal government, having served as the Minister of the Interior from 2014 to 2018 under a liberal administration. Maxime Prévot from Les Engagés has been appointed as the new Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the cabinet comprises a total of ten ministers and four female ministers.

Despite the N-VA's leadership role, analysts suggest that Belgium is unlikely to experience a drastic shift to the right. This is attributed to the continued presence of centrist parties within the coalition, which maintain a substantial majority. The coalition's composition indicates a blend of ideologies, aiming to ensure stability while addressing various political challenges.

The formation of this government is a noteworthy development for Belgium, as it represents a historical first for the N-VA to lead the federal government. Observers will be keenly watching how this coalition navigates the complex political landscape and addresses pressing issues affecting the nation.
