In a significant revelation, it has come to light that a company based in Bavaria has been exporting chromite to Russia, which is believed to be aiding the country's military operations amidst ongoing conflicts. The firm, EKC, located in Würzburg, has reportedly exported approximately EUR24.2 million worth of chromite from January 2023 to April 2024, accounting for nearly half of all Russian imports of this crucial material.
Despite international sanctions aimed at curbing Russia's military capabilities, EKC's exports have raised serious concerns among European authorities. Following the exposure of these dealings, the UK government placed EKC on its sanctions list on February 24, 2025. The company's Chief Financial Officer has denounced this decision as unjust, asserting that EKC has complied with all applicable international sanctions and intends to challenge the ruling legally.
Chromite is a vital resource used in the manufacturing of military equipment; it is primarily utilized for coating artillery barrels to enhance their durability and prevent corrosion. Industry experts suggest that the use of chromite can significantly extend the lifespan of artillery units, making it an essential commodity for Russia, which relies on imports to meet its chromite consumption needs.
Historically, EKC has had dealings with several Russian military contractors, including Uralwagonsawod, which is a subsidiary of the Russian defense conglomerate Rostec. This company plays a pivotal role in the refurbishment and supply of military hardware for the Russian armed forces.
Founded in 2006 by Evgeny Porokhnya and Vladimir Platunov, both of whom are Russian nationals residing in Germany, EKC initially focused on importing raw materials from former Soviet states. However, since the financial crisis of 2008, the company has shifted its business strategy towards exporting chromite, primarily sourced from South Africa.
Prior to the EU's recent sanctions implemented in February 2025, which explicitly prohibited the export of chromite and related chemical substances to Russia, EKC operated within legal boundaries. The sanctions were introduced as part of the EU's ongoing efforts to restrict resources that could bolster Russia's military capabilities in light of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
As the situation develops, EKC finds itself at the center of a contentious debate over the role of international trade in supporting military efforts, raising questions about corporate responsibility and the enforcement of sanctions in global commerce.
