Hagen, NRW - Urban Industries, a family-owned business established for over 40 years, has filed for bankruptcy despite the booming defense sector and increased military spending in Germany. The company's CEO, Felix Urban, announced the insolvency at the Hagen District Court, marking a surprising turn of events for a firm that recently expanded its operations.
Founded in 1981 as a locksmith service, Urban Industries made a significant shift in 2004 to enter the defense industry. In recent years, the company saw its workforce double, investing millions in modernizing its facilities in North Rhine-Westphalia and establishing a new production site in the Netherlands. However, the anticipated influx of contracts from the German government's special 100-billion-euro funding for the military did not materialize.
The company specializes in processing high-strength steel, which is essential for military applications, including turret components and blast protection plates for armored vehicles. Despite the overall health of the defense industry--highlighted by Rheinmetall's recent record earnings--the failure of Urban Industries to secure contracts has raised eyebrows.
Reports indicate that the company struggled with rapid growth and insufficient order volumes, leading to its financial difficulties. The preliminary insolvency administrator, Dr. Mike Westkamp, suggested that the company's expansion may have outpaced the market's capacity to provide orders, exacerbated by bureaucratic delays in the defense procurement process. A significant client had also reportedly defaulted on payment, further straining the company's finances.
Currently, the business operations of Urban Industries continue as usual, and the 80 employees will receive insolvency benefits from April to June, providing a temporary safety net during this challenging period. Westkamp remains optimistic about the potential for recovery, noting that there are already interested parties looking into acquiring the business.
Felix Urban has expressed his determination to maintain leadership of the company, urging stakeholders to persevere through this challenging phase with the hope of regrouping and resuming growth in the future.
