Austrian Chancellor Proposes Vienna for Ukraine-Russia Talks

Wed 20th Aug, 2025
The Chancellor of Austria, Christian Stocker, has proposed Vienna as a potential venue for peace negotiations between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin. In a recent statement, Stocker emphasized the capital's longstanding tradition as a site for dialogue and expressed his government's intent to coordinate with the International Criminal Court (ICC) to facilitate Putin's participation in the discussions. The ICC has issued a warrant for Putin's arrest since March 2023, accusing him of the forced abduction of Ukrainian children. Switzerland has also offered to host the talks, with Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis stating that his country would grant immunity to Putin should he attend the Ukraine peace conference, despite the outstanding international arrest warrant. French President Emmanuel Macron previously suggested Geneva as a host city, advocating for a 'neutral country' to mediate the discussions. Macron noted that all European leaders, including Zelenskyy and U.S. President Donald Trump, concurred that the meeting should take place in Europe. Meanwhile, Trump has been in discussions with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán regarding the possibility of holding the Zelenskyy-Putin meeting in Budapest. The U.S. Presidential Office confirmed these discussions, although further details remain undisclosed. Hungary, while a member of the EU, has historically pursued its own diplomatic course concerning Ukraine and Russia. In response to inquiries about the location for the meeting, U.S. Government spokesperson Karoline Leavitt refrained from speculating on Budapest, neither confirming nor denying the discussions about the Hungarian capital. According to reports, Putin suggested Moscow as a potential meeting venue during his conversation with Trump, though Leavitt declined to comment further due to the confidential nature of the talks. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, when asked about Budapest as a possible site for a trilateral summit, indicated that it was a possibility but emphasized the need for a bilateral meeting to occur first. The prospect of a Zelenskyy-Putin meeting was a central topic during the Ukraine summit held recently. Trump has expressed his intention to first organize a one-on-one meeting between the two presidents, followed by a trilateral summit involving himself. Zelenskyy has indicated his willingness to participate, especially in a meeting that includes Trump alongside Putin. However, Russia has been cautious since the summit, with Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov insisting on careful preparation before any meeting can take place. In a recent radio interview, Trump stated that both Putin and Zelenskyy are in the process of arranging a meeting, asserting that discussions are underway. According to Leavitt, Putin has committed to meeting with Zelenskyy, which could mark a significant step towards resolving ongoing tensions in the region.
