Coalition Talks in Austria Approach Conclusion: ÖVP, SPÖ, and Neos

Tue 25th Feb, 2025

In Austria, coalition negotiations among the Austrian People's Party (ÖVP), the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ), and the liberal Neos appear to be nearing a successful conclusion. Sources close to the discussions indicate that constructive efforts are underway to finalize a shared governmental agenda, which is expected to be unveiled by midweek. This potential three-party coalition would represent a significant shift in the Austrian political landscape.

Following the parliamentary elections in autumn 2024, the current coalition partners initiated discussions, which initially faltered around the turn of the year. Subsequently, the right-wing Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) was granted the mandate to form a government due to their electoral success. However, attempts to establish a coalition between the FPÖ and the ÖVP have recently been abandoned, prolonging the quest for a new government to approximately 150 days--a record duration for Austria.

Should an agreement be reached, ÖVP leader Christian Stocker, who was appointed as party chief following the resignation of former Chancellor Karl Nehammer in January, is poised to assume the role of Chancellor. Nehammer's departure was influenced by his unwillingness to negotiate with the right-populist FPÖ, in contrast to Stocker's more conciliatory approach.

The anticipated new government will be expected to tackle pressing issues, including addressing a significant budget deficit and revitalizing the sluggish economy. Moreover, immigration policies are likely to be a focal point, with the ÖVP aiming to adopt a stricter stance on immigration, similar to the approach taken by the CDU/CSU in Germany.

As the discussions progress, many eyes are on the potential implications of this coalition for the future of Austrian politics and governance. A successful coalition among these three parties would not only be historic but could also pave the way for new policies and strategies to address the challenges facing the nation.
