Austria Closes Borders Amid Fears of Animal Disease Outbreak

Fri 4th Apr, 2025

In a significant move to protect its livestock, Austria has decided to close its borders with Hungary and Slovakia starting Saturday. This measure will affect 24 border crossings and is set to remain in place until May 20.

The decision comes in response to the alarming spread of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD), which is currently affecting animal populations in neighboring Hungary and Slovakia. The virus is spreading rapidly and poses a serious threat just a few kilometers from the Austrian border, prompting authorities to take preemptive action.

Reports indicate that thousands of animals are being culled in both Hungary and Slovakia to contain the outbreak. FMD is known for its highly contagious nature, impacting all cloven-hoofed animals, including cattle, pigs, goats, and sheep, as well as wild animals like deer.

Austria's proactive approach aims to prevent a repeat of a devastating outbreak nearly 50 years ago, which led to the culling of 80,000 animals. Now, with the borders closed, strict controls will be enforced at the remaining open crossings, and an import ban on animals and animal products will be implemented. This includes restrictions on cattle, pigs, fresh meat, raw milk, and game meat.

Experts have expressed serious concerns about the disease. A virology specialist from the Veterinary University of Vienna has labeled the FMD virus as one of the most dangerous pathogens known, highlighting its high transmission risk. The incubation period for the virus ranges from two to 14 days, allowing ample time for it to spread undetected among animal populations.

In related news, Germany experienced an FMD outbreak earlier this year, impacting a buffalo herd in Brandenburg. Although this incident was contained, it raised alarms as Hungary and Slovakia reported outbreaks in their cattle herds in March. Farmers in these regions have reported severe losses, often resulting in the total loss of their herds.

This situation not only threatens the agricultural sector but also poses potential economic repercussions if not managed promptly. As Austria enforces these strict measures, the hope remains that the swift action will mitigate the risks posed by this highly contagious disease.
