Arrests of Minister and General Signal Tensions in South Sudan's Government

In a significant escalation of political tensions in South Sudan, two high-ranking officials have been detained amid suspicions of an impending coup targeting a faction within the power-sharing government. The arrests include the Minister of Petroleum, Puot Kang Chol, and Lieutenant General Doup Lam, who is closely aligned with Vice President Riek Machar.

The Minister was taken into custody at his residence in Juba, the nation's capital, along with several family members and security personnel. According to an official statement from the ministry, the operation was carried out by agents from the National Security Service.

This crackdown occurred shortly after the South Sudan People's Defense Forces (SSPDF), which are loyal to President Salva Kiir, apprehended General Lam and surrounded Machar's residence. A spokesperson for Machar has condemned the general's arrest, asserting that it contravenes the 2018 power-sharing agreement that aimed to end five years of civil conflict in the nation.

Concerns have been raised regarding the potential destabilization of this fragile agreement, with the spokesperson expressing grave apprehension over the heavy military presence around Machar's home.

The SSPDF has accused General Lam and his troops of collaborating with rebel factions in the Upper Nile state, a region predominantly inhabited by the Nuer ethnic group, to which both Machar and Lam belong. Recently, the United Nations Mission in South Sudan reported a surge in violence in this area, highlighting clashes between the army and armed youth, which have reportedly resulted in civilian casualties.

The civil war in South Sudan erupted in December 2013 after President Kiir dismissed Vice President Machar, leading to an estimated 400,000 deaths and displacing over 2.5 million people. Although a peace agreement was reached in 2018, its implementation remains incomplete, and the political landscape continues to be marked by instability.

The power-sharing government has struggled to maintain unity, with elections that were scheduled for the previous year postponed due to financial constraints. The ongoing economic hardships and violence have further complicated the situation in the country.
