Apple's Upcoming Studio Display 2: Multiple Variants in the Works

Recent reports indicate that Apple is developing several new display models for desktop use, including a successor to the Studio Display, which was launched alongside the initial Mac Studio in 2022. According to a Bloomberg report, at least two new models are planned, with the first carrying the codename J427 and expected to be released by late 2025 or early 2026. Additionally, a second model, known as J527, is also in development.

The current Studio Display utilizes technology from a 27-inch iMac equipped with an Intel chip, and while it has enjoyed a period without significant competition, the landscape is changing with new alternatives. The J427 model is anticipated to offer enhancements such as HDR support and a higher refresh rate, potentially positioning it as a strong competitor in the market. It is unclear whether the J527 is an additional model or the direct successor to the existing display.

In addition to the Studio Display, Apple continues to sell the Pro Display XDR, which debuted in December 2019 and comes with a hefty price tag starting at EUR5,499, excluding the stand that costs an additional EUR1,099. As of now, no technical specifications for the J427 or J527 have been leaked, leaving much to speculation.

For those not seeking to invest in Apple's offerings, competitors like LG and Samsung are providing comparable alternatives. LG's UltraFine 6K display, which features a 32-inch size and Thunderbolt 5 connectivity, is one option, although pricing and availability details have yet to be released. Dell also offers a 32-inch 6K display equipped with Thunderbolt 4, which could serve as a more affordable alternative to the Pro Display XDR, priced at less than half the cost.

Recently, Apple updated the Mac Studio lineup with new M4-Max chips, alongside an optional M3 Ultra variant, but did not introduce new display models during the announcement. If the Bloomberg report holds true, consumers may need to exercise patience before any new displays are revealed.
