Apple's M5 Chip Enters Mass Production Phase

Fri 7th Feb, 2025

Apple's next-generation System on Chip (SoC), the M5, has reportedly commenced mass production at TSMC, the company's primary chip manufacturing partner. This development is expected to pave the way for the release of new Mac models featuring the M5 chip, anticipated to arrive in the fall.

According to industry sources, including ET News, the M5 chip emphasizes enhanced performance in artificial intelligence applications. Since January, various partners have been engaged in processing the chips at packaging facilities, where they undergo integration onto substrates and rigorous testing. The packaging process involves companies such as ASE from Taiwan, Amkor from the USA, and JCET from China, with ASE and Amkor already active in this phase, while JCET is expected to join later.

The initial production focuses on the standard version of the M5, which is slated for the MacBook Pro M5 this autumn, with a possibility of an earlier release for the iPad Pro M5. More advanced versions, including Pro, Max, and Ultra variants, will follow at a later date. The M5 chip will utilize TSMC's 3-nanometer technology, diverging from the anticipated 2-nanometer process due to cost considerations. Despite this, improvements are expected with the N3P manufacturing process, which may offer up to 5% higher clock speeds and a 10% decrease in power consumption compared to the previous N3E generation used for the M4 chip.

Future iterations of the M5, particularly the Pro variant, are expected to introduce significant architectural advancements, including TSMC's integrated System on Chip (SoIC) technology. This innovation allows for the stacking of multiple chips, which could enhance the chip's capabilities ranging from cache and DRAM integration to combined CPU and GPU configurations.

Currently, the timeline for the M5's debut remains somewhat ambiguous. In the previous cycle with the M4 chip, Apple first released an iPad Pro followed by various MacBook Pro models in the fall. Notably, many Mac models are still equipped with the M3 chip from 2023, with expectations that the transition to M4 will occur in the spring. Consequently, a potential M5 version of the entry-level MacBook may not be released until next year. Additionally, there is speculation about a second iteration of the Vision Pro headset potentially utilizing the M5 chip, although its release date is still unclear, given that the current model featuring the M2 chip was launched in February 2024 and has been on the market for a year.
