Apple's AirPods Max Update Delayed: USB-C Firmware Still Unavailable

Wed 2nd Apr, 2025

Apple's anticipated update for the AirPods Max, featuring USB-C connectivity and enhanced audio capabilities, remains elusive. The new firmware is essential for enabling lossless audio and low-latency connections, particularly useful for applications like video editing. Despite the recent rollout of iOS 18.4 and macOS 15.4, which were released ahead of schedule, the corresponding firmware for AirPods Max has yet to be made available.

Users have noted on forums that the update, designated as version 7E99, is not downloadable. Reports indicate that the necessary update file has not been provided by Apple, preventing users from upgrading their devices. One user speculated that there may have been an oversight in publishing the update file, which is critical for the installation process.

Initially, Apple's firmware update page indicated that version 7E99 was available. However, the status has now changed to 'Coming soon,' suggesting there may be unresolved issues that led to this delay.

Installing firmware updates for AirPods devices is known to be a complex process. Unlike other devices, users cannot manually trigger updates. Instead, they must follow a specific routine to ensure a successful installation. For the AirPods Max with USB-C, users need to connect their devices to an iPhone, iPad, or Mac that runs on the latest operating system--currently iOS/iPadOS 18.4 or macOS 15.4.

After ensuring a stable Wi-Fi connection, users should connect the AirPods Max to a USB-C power source. The devices must remain within Bluetooth range of the paired Apple device for approximately 30 minutes. Users may also find some success by playing a song on Apple Music during this waiting period to facilitate the update process.

The delay in releasing the firmware raises questions about potential technical issues that Apple may be encountering. As the company continues to refine its offerings, many users are hopeful that the update will be released soon, allowing them to take full advantage of the AirPods Max's capabilities.
