Apple Restructures Leadership Amid Siri Development Delays

Sat 22nd Mar, 2025

Apple Inc. has implemented a significant managerial restructuring in response to delays in the rollout of an updated version of its AI-powered virtual assistant, Siri. According to reports from Bloomberg, John Giannandrea, who previously oversaw the company's artificial intelligence initiatives, has been relieved of his responsibilities related to Siri.

In a strategic shift, Mike Rockwell, who was formerly in charge of the Vision Pro augmented reality headset, will now take over the reins of Siri's development. Rockwell will report directly to Craig Federighi, Apple's senior vice president of software engineering.

The decision comes after Apple acknowledged that the launch of new features for Siri, which were initially anticipated for spring, will be postponed until next year. The revised timeline highlights the company's challenges in enhancing Siri's capabilities to better serve user needs.

Apple's vision for the enhanced Siri is to create a more intelligent assistant that can leverage personal user data and integrate across various applications. The company aims for users to easily interact with Siri, such as asking for optimal departure times to pick up relatives from airports, with the assistant autonomously gathering relevant information like flight schedules and traffic conditions.

This move is part of a broader trend where tech giants, including competitors like Google and Samsung, are striving to incorporate advanced AI functionalities into their devices. Additionally, Amazon is set to provide early access to a new AI version of its Alexa assistant in the United States.

Apple has grouped its new AI offerings under the banner of "Apple Intelligence." The current capabilities of this software include text rephrasing, summarization, and the generation of new emojis based on user descriptions. In Germany, the first features of Apple Intelligence are expected to debut in April, with the company emphasizing AI functionalities in its marketing strategies for the latest iPhone generation.
