Apple Plans Significant Investments in Artificial Intelligence

Sat 2nd Aug, 2025

In a bid to enhance its position in the artificial intelligence (AI) landscape, Apple has announced plans for substantial investments and a focus on acquisitions. The company's CEO emphasized that AI is among the most transformative technologies of our era, and it will be integrated across all Apple products and platforms.

Apple is poised to increase its spending in the AI sector significantly. The CEO noted that a considerable number of new hires will be dedicated to developing AI functionalities, stating that the company is fully committed to this initiative.

Regarding acquisitions, Apple has indicated a willingness to consider larger purchases of AI companies to accelerate its strategic roadmap. The company has already acquired several smaller AI firms this year and remains open to further opportunities in this space. Progress is also being made on the long-awaited enhancements to Siri, Apple's voice assistant, with a more personalized version expected to launch in 2026. While new features were originally slated for iOS 18, their rollout was delayed due to technical challenges.

Apple has notably ramped up its investment in its data center infrastructure, specifically for its Private Cloud Compute initiative, which supports its AI endeavors. In the first nine months of the current fiscal year, Apple invested approximately $9.5 billion in its infrastructure--exceeding the total for the previous year. However, the investment levels still lag significantly behind those of competitors such as Microsoft and Google, who are also heavily investing in AI.

The CFO of Apple confirmed that capital expenditures related to AI will rise substantially. He reiterated Apple's commitment to a hybrid model that incorporates third-party infrastructure, as seen in the integration of ChatGPT.

Despite advancements, Apple's AI capabilities still trail behind major competitors, largely due to its cautious and privacy-focused approach. Recent news that former Chief Designer Jony Ive is working on new AI hardware for OpenAI has raised concerns among Apple investors. Nevertheless, the CEO sought to alleviate these worries by asserting that the iPhone, which has sold over three billion units, remains integral to Apple's ecosystem. He suggested that emerging AI devices would serve as complementary products rather than replacements and that Apple is also exploring such innovations.
