Anger in Mühlheim: Birds Stolen from Local Poultry Breeder

Wed 9th Apr, 2025

Mühlheim, Germany - In a distressing incident for local poultry enthusiasts, Christian Eitel, a dedicated poultry breeder with 43 years of experience, reported the theft of several birds from his property in Mühlheim-Dietesheim. The theft occurred overnight on April 1, with culprits making off with chickens, pigeons, and a rooster.

Eitel, along with fellow breeder Michael Schmitt, suspects that the perpetrators were familiar with poultry breeding practices. Evidence suggests that the thieves selectively targeted specific birds, meticulously sorting out a prized rooster and five quality hens of the Sebright breed while discarding less desirable birds.

In total, ten pigeons of the Prachener Kanik and Mährische Strasser breeds are also missing. The intruders employed tools to cut through fences and dismantle locks, leaving behind damaged materials at the scene.

Reflecting on the crime, Eitel expressed his disbelief at the calculated nature of the theft, noting that the act of choosing specific birds indicates a level of expertise. He emphasized the community-oriented nature of the poultry breeding sector, stating that such incidents are rare despite occasional setbacks.

Having started his poultry breeding journey at the age of six, Eitel has invested significant time and resources into his hobby, which serves as a balance to his work as a painter and decorator. He visits his birds daily, considering them part of his family and a cherished hobby.

With poultry exhibitions scheduled throughout Germany from October to January, the theft poses a significant setback for Eitel, who estimates his losses at around EUR2000. Due to identification rings on the birds, it is unlikely they will be able to compete in future shows, although the stolen birds may still be bred by the thieves.

The local poultry breeding association, established in 1896, currently has 35 members and plays a vital role in fostering community among breeders. Eitel, while frustrated, hopes that the investigation will yield results, urging anyone with information to contact the authorities.
