Ampler, the Estonian bicycle manufacturer, has unveiled its latest innovation in electric bicycles: the first E-Bike models equipped with a USB-C charging port. This marks a significant shift in the e-bike market, where various manufacturers have utilized a range of different charging connectors.
The new models, available for pre-order starting today, are set to begin shipping in June. The USB-C port allows for charging at 140 watts, which is impressive for smartphones but relatively standard for e-bikes. Ampler claims that a full charge will take approximately 3.5 hours, while most daily commutes can be managed with just 2.5 hours of charging. Additionally, the USB-C port supports reverse charging, enabling users to charge their smartphones using the bike's battery.
The battery itself has a capacity of 336 watt-hours, providing an estimated range of 50 to 100 kilometers on a single charge. However, these bikes are designed primarily for urban commuting rather than maximum range, focusing instead on lightweight construction and a discreet appearance that does not immediately identify them as e-bikes.
Initially, Ampler is offering two models featuring this new charging option: the Nova and the Nova Pro. Both models come in different sizes with options for either a diamond frame or a step-through frame. Unlike some competitors, such as Cowboy or VanMoof, Ampler utilizes standard components from well-known suppliers like Shimano, Gates, MicroSHIFT, and Panaracer. This decision facilitates easier servicing at numerous bicycle repair shops.
The Nova is priced starting at EUR2,990 and features 27.5-inch wheels along with a nine-speed transmission from MicroSHIFT. The bike is designed for an upright and comfortable riding position. In contrast, the Nova Pro offers a sportier design with 28-inch wheels and choices between a single-speed bike with a Gates carbon belt drive or a ten-speed chain drive using Shimano Deore components.
The Nova Pro starts at EUR3,490. Both models come with manufacturer accessories and a companion app that includes GPS tracking and theft monitoring features. Notably, all the bikes are handcrafted within the European Union, and Ampler provides a two-year warranty on their products.
