AMD Sees Growth in Desktop CPU Market Share

Sun 16th Feb, 2025

In the fourth quarter of 2024, AMD has made significant gains in the market share of its Ryzen processors for both desktop PCs and laptops, as reported by Mercury Research. Compared to the same period in 2023, the company increased its share of x86 mobile processors by 55% and 8.4 percentage points, bringing its share to 23.7%. In the desktop segment, Ryzen processors saw a rise of 7.3 percentage points, reaching 27.1% market share.

This growth can be partly attributed to Intel's ongoing challenges, which included issues with defective Raptor Lake processors due to multiple bugs in their BIOS and microcode. Additionally, the launch of Intel's new Core Ultra 200S desktop generation in the fall did not meet performance expectations initially, further benefiting AMD.

AMD also reported not just increases in unit market share but also in revenue share, especially in the desktop CPU segment. This surge is likely driven by the high demand for the Ryzen 7 9800X3D, an eight-core processor priced around 570 euros, which features a large Level-3 cache that enhances gaming performance.

The following table illustrates AMD's market share in various x86 processor categories:

In the highly competitive notebook market, where new challengers like Qualcomm's Snapdragon X and Nvidia/Mediatek are emerging with Windows-on-ARM devices, AMD's revenue growth of 44% is slightly below the unit growth of 55%. AMD now holds a 23.7% share of x86 mobile processors.

Moreover, AMD's server chips continue to be a lucrative segment. While the Mercury data does not include AI accelerators like the MI300 series, the Epyc processors are now found in one out of every four x86 servers, with a significant revenue share of 35.5%. Overall, AMD accounts for 24.7% of all sold x86 processors.
