Mon 5th May, 2025

In a significant leadership transition, Alexander Hoffmann has been appointed as the new head of the CSU parliamentary group, succeeding Alexander Dobrindt, who is set to become the Federal Minister of the Interior. Hoffmann, a 50-year-old lawyer from Franconia, is expected to raise his profile in the political landscape as he leads the 44 members of the CSU faction in the Bundestag.

The unanimous support for Hoffmann was evident during the vote, where all 43 present CSU representatives endorsed his leadership. Known for his grounded demeanor and strong communication skills, Hoffmann has been a member of the Bundestag since 2013, representing the Main-Spessart district. He has played a crucial role as the parliamentary manager of the CSU group, overseeing internal organization.

Hoffmann expressed his gratitude for the confidence placed in him by his peers, viewing his election as a strong endorsement of his prior contributions. CSU leader Markus Söder praised Hoffmann during the announcement, highlighting his exceptional oratory skills and the crucial role he will play in advancing legislative initiatives, particularly in migration policy.

In addition to his parliamentary duties, Hoffmann's responsibilities will include serving on the coalition committee between the Union and the SPD, a position that will require him to navigate complex political discussions and negotiations. His experience has also involved engaging with opposition parties, including the AfD, reflecting the challenging political dynamics he will continue to face as the new group leader.

Hoffmann's background includes extensive legal expertise, having worked in various roles, including at the city administration in Würzburg prior to his election to the Bundestag. His leadership is anticipated to foster unity and effectiveness within the CSU as it continues to address key issues facing German society.
