Renewed Clashes Erupt in Aleppo Following Brief Ceasefire

Hostilities have resumed in the Syrian city of Aleppo after a short-lived ceasefire, as government forces renewed their offensive against armed Kurdish groups. Reports indicate that the Syrian transitional government's military, along with allied militias, launched significant attacks on the predominantly Kurdish neighborhood of Sheikh Maqsoud.

According to information from the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which relies on local sources, the conflict has sharply intensified. Kurdish groups allege that government forces deployed tanks and artillery in the recent assaults, resulting in civilian casualties and further destabilizing the situation in the city. There are also claims, supported by the monitoring group, that medical personnel in another Kurdish district of Aleppo were killed during the renewed violence.

The latest escalation follows an earlier declaration of a ceasefire by Syrian military authorities, who had urged armed groups to vacate the affected neighborhoods. Despite this temporary lull, clashes between the forces of the Islamic transitional government and Kurdish fighters have persisted in Aleppo, leading to at least 21 reported fatalities in recent days.

Aleppo, a major urban center in northern Syria, has been under the control of the transitional government since the ousting of former leader Bashar al-Assad in December 2024. However, the districts of Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafiyeh remain under Kurdish administration, highlighting ongoing territorial and political disputes since the regime change.

An agreement reached in March stipulated that Kurdish civil and military institutions would be integrated into Syria's central administration and army by the end of 2025. Furthermore, Kurdish forces were expected to withdraw from the remaining controlled districts in Aleppo. Implementation of these terms has been stalled due to disagreements between the Kurdish authorities and the transitional government, resulting in a fragile and volatile situation.

The renewed fighting has triggered a significant humanitarian crisis. United Nations sources estimate that around 30,000 people have been displaced as a result of the recent violence. State media, however, report that the number of displaced residents could be as high as 140,000, pointing to the scale and severity of the conflict's impact on civilians. Many of those fleeing have sought refuge in neighboring regions or temporary shelters, facing uncertain conditions as hostilities continue.

The ongoing conflict in Aleppo underscores the broader instability in northern Syria, where shifting alliances and unresolved political issues have fueled recurrent episodes of violence. The failure to implement agreements on the integration of Kurdish factions into national structures has further complicated efforts to achieve lasting peace in the region.

International observers are closely monitoring the situation, urging all parties to return to negotiations and prioritize the safety and well-being of civilians. Meanwhile, the humanitarian situation remains dire, with thousands at risk and limited access to essential services.
