The Growing Importance of AI Features in Smartphone Purchases

Thu 20th Feb, 2025

As consumers in Germany increasingly prioritize the features of their smartphones, the role of artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities is becoming more significant. A recent survey conducted by the Digital Association Bitkom reveals that 54% of respondents consider AI tools an essential factor when choosing a new smartphone.

Among the AI features that are gaining traction are voice assistants like Siri and Google Assistant, as well as chatbots such as ChatGPT and Google Gemini. Additionally, innovative photo editing tools, such as the 'magic eraser' that allows users to remove unwanted elements from images, are also in high demand. Another sought-after function is the AI image search, exemplified by Google's 'Circle to Search,' which enables users to initiate a web search by encircling an object displayed on their screen with a finger.

The survey indicates that a remarkable 72% of participants are already utilizing at least one AI feature on their devices. Leading the pack are voice assistants, used by 58% of respondents, followed by chatbots at 48%, and AI-driven photo editing tools at 38%.

Interestingly, the survey also highlights a trend toward longer smartphone usage. Despite the growing demand for advanced AI features, consumers are holding on to their devices for more extended periods. Only 35% of those surveyed own a smartphone less than a year old, a decrease from 43% in 2024 and 55% in 2023. Nearly half of the respondents (47%) have been using their smartphones for over two years, a significant increase from 27% the previous year. Currently, the average age of a self-purchased smartphone stands at 24 months, compared to 17.5 months in 2024.

Markus Haas, a member of the Bitkom Executive Board, attributes this trend of prolonged smartphone usage to several factors. He points out that manufacturers are increasingly using high-quality materials, enhancing water and dust resistance, and providing longer software update support. Moreover, advancements in battery technology and optimized software have contributed to reduced battery wear.

For 2025, Bitkom anticipates a 2.1% increase in revenue within the smartphone, app, and mobile communication market, projecting a new record high of EUR40.1 billion. Data and voice services are expected to account for the largest share, generating EUR23.5 billion, representing a 1.9% increase from the previous year. Smartphone sales alone are projected to reach EUR12.1 billion, marking a 2.5% rise.

The findings of the Bitkom survey are based on telephone interviews conducted with 1,004 individuals aged 16 and older in Germany during January and February. The results are considered representative of the broader population.
