A recent study conducted by the Digital Association Bitkom has revealed a significant shift in communication practices among businesses in Germany. The findings indicate that only 18% of companies now regularly utilize fax machines for either internal or external communication, marking a dramatic decrease in fax usage.

Previously, the reliance on fax machines was a hallmark of Germany's slow pace of digital transformation. In just one year, the number of businesses still sending and receiving faxes has declined from 30% to 18%, highlighting a growing trend towards more modern forms of communication.

The Bitkom study surveyed 603 companies with a minimum of 20 employees, showcasing how the traditional fax has become largely obsolete.

In contrast, email has become the dominant communication tool, with 100% of surveyed companies indicating they frequently use it. Additionally, nearly all organizations (94%) reported regular communication via smartphones, and the classic landline telephone remains prevalent, with 93% of businesses still utilizing it. Videoconferencing has also gained traction, with 67% of companies employing this method for regular communication. Furthermore, messaging applications are increasingly popular, used by 66% of firms for both internal and external messaging.

Despite the clear shift away from fax machines, the study pointed to a hesitance among businesses to fully embrace artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. According to Bitkom, many companies exhibit skepticism regarding the integration of AI, with 53% believing their employees are resistant to its adoption. Additionally, 75% of firms prefer to observe the outcomes of AI implementation in other organizations before making a decision.

A significant portion of companies (50%) also expressed doubts about the tangible benefits of incorporating AI into their operations, indicating concerns over whether such investments would yield sufficient returns.

Bitkom's leadership has cautioned against excessive caution regarding AI, emphasizing the importance of proactive engagement with this technology. They argue that businesses must initiate the integration of AI solutions and provide adequate training for their employees to avoid falling behind in an increasingly competitive landscape.

As the business environment continues to evolve, the move away from fax machines signifies a broader trend towards embracing digital communication methods and exploring innovative technologies that can enhance operational efficiency.
