AfD Leaders Weidel and Chrupalla See Salary Increase Amid Controversy

Tue 1st Jul, 2025

In a recent development, the leaders of the Alternative for Germany (AfD), Alice Weidel and Tino Chrupalla, have significantly increased their salaries, drawing criticism from various quarters.

According to reports, both politicians will now receive a total monthly compensation of approximately EUR24,000. This amount includes the standard Bundestag salary of around EUR12,000 and a newly approved allowance of EUR12,000 from the AfD parliamentary group, which has been doubled from the previous EUR6,000. Additionally, they are entitled to a tax-free monthly expense allowance of about EUR5,300 to cover costs related to their parliamentary duties, which can include expenses for office rent, materials, transportation, and accommodations.

The increase in salaries is part of a financial plan approved unanimously by the AfD parliamentary group. The decision also extends to other members of the party's leadership, with the allowance for other board members now set at approximately EUR6,000 per month, reflecting a doubling from previous amounts.

Many members of the public and social media commentators have sharply criticized the salary hikes for Weidel and Chrupalla, accusing them of prioritizing financial gain over their responsibilities. Comments on social media platforms include remarks indicating disbelief, with some users sarcastically suggesting that the increase is a bid to stockpile resources ahead of potential political challenges.

Within the AfD itself, reactions have varied. Some party members expressed shock at the salary increase, labeling it as excessive and suggesting that the funds could have been better utilized to benefit the party and its initiatives.

As the political landscape continues to evolve, the AfD leadership is also facing scrutiny regarding discussions around a potential ban on the party. Some political figures, including members of the Social Democratic Party (SPD) and officials from the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), have indicated a willingness to consider such measures.

Overall, the substantial salary increase for the AfD leaders has sparked a significant debate regarding accountability and the ethical implications of financial decisions within political parties.
