The Oktoberfest will last a day longer than usual this year. For the 200th Anniversary of the Oktoberfest, an additional day, Monday the 4th October, has been added by the city authorities. Revellers should be especially pleased by a spontaneous visit to Theresienwiese that day, as the benches in the beer tents will not be covered by reservations, says Die Sueddeutsche Zeitung.

A special ceremony with a parade and horse racing will take place at the start of the Oktoberfest, which begins one day earlier this year on the 17th September.

The cavalry of the Bavarian National Guard from 200 years ago, founded a tradition to celebrate Oktoberfest in honor of  the wedding of Crown Prince Ludwig, later King Ludwig I. The area parallel to the Oktoberfest will be transformed into an historical festival. In addition to the racecourse, city festival officials will organize additional tents replicating the early days of the Oktoberfest - including for example, the so-called Chapiteau tent with velodrome, an animal tent for horses and other shows animals, and a historical tent with dance floor and music platforms.
