Hair The Musical at Deutsches Theatre

Tue 25th Jul, 2023

Hair, the iconic rock musical, serves as a powerful plea against war and continues to resonate with the spirit of young generations, from the 1960s to movements like Fridays for Future. The musical's message of longing for a better and more peaceful future remains relevant and potent even today. The celebrated production from the Salzburg Landestheater, directed by Andreas Gergen, will be presented in Munich as part of the "Flower Power Festival" for a two-week run.

Hair's impact has been nothing short of transformative. When it premiered on Broadway in 1968, its raw energy, experimental storytelling, and political themes caused a scandal. However, it quickly gained cult status worldwide and became a symbol of the peace movement and youth counterculture. The musical's powerful rock music and psychedelic elements create an energetic and immersive experience. Hit songs like "Let The Sunshine In" and "Ain't Got No" have become classics. The creators, Gerome Ragni and James Rado, drew inspiration from their own lives to craft the autobiographically inspired Off-Broadway musical. The music, composed by Galt MacDermot, blends American rock with African rhythms, giving the show a unique and distinctive style. The musical was later adapted into a film by Milo? Forman in 1979.

The plot of Hair takes place during the "Age of Aquarius," a time of transformation, racial harmony, and an end to war. The central characters, members of the "Tribe," including Berger, Sheila, and Claude, reject societal norms and traditional roles, advocating for equality, free love, and peace. However, their pursuit of civil disobedience and rejection of middle-class values lead to internal conflicts within the group.

Hair's enduring relevance and popularity showcase its continued significance as a call for peace and change. The musical's timeless themes resonate with audiences of different generations, making it a powerful and enduring theatrical production.
